The book offers clarity to the historical and emerging views of mixed-race in the United States. The author effectively singles out the state and presence of mixed-race individuals and gives substance to this rising voice. The author provides the missing pieces of historical, contemporary and future view for educators working with mixed-race children. However, the book provides implications (without meaning to do so) for health care professionals as well.First, in the preface, author Sandra Winn Tutwiler shares her deliberation about title, purpose, focus, terms, and limitations and provides final rationale for book organization and content. She clarifies that the concept of the fifth minority is presented to create visibility and is not meant to construct another boxed-in category or label; diversity within this group is recognized. Written in one voice, the book's nine chapters are cohesively connected and can be (revisited separately; however it is the combined approach of chapters read sequentially that provides tne most in-depth, comprehensive grasp of this multidimensional topic. Organized within three major parts, the book provides an extensive yet succinct foundational overview of the varied experiences and marginalized (different) and diverse experiences of mixed-race individuals within schools, communities, and society as influenced by historical, political, economical, social, and legal events over time.The length and style of chapters are consistent, clear, and reasonably concise. With that said, the beginning chapters were heavy and laden with statistics ana content that made it difficult at times to get through, but is needed to understand the direction and purose of the book. Several interspersed charts and gures condense multifaceted information into an easy compare and contrast format. Opening chapter quotes and subsequent quotes strategically juxtaposed amidst complex concepts and issues translate theory into compelling real-life case examples. Quotes may be particularly insightful to readers outside of mixedrace groups; validating for readers within mixed-race groups; and powerful for convincing the doubtful reader about the uniqueness, diversity, and marginalization of mixed-race peoples. …" @default.
