- W2609164414 abstract "The data used pertained to women in the demographic registration system covering 87 villages in Manikganj district of Bangladesh where private voluntary development agencies had been operating credit-based income generating programs since the mid-1970s. In a 1994 follow-up survey of 1535 married women 15-49 years old who were nonusers of contraception 707 women were identified who were also in the original 1986 sample. When assessing the changes between 1986 and 1994 significant differences could be seen in years of schooling literacy rate land ownership and husbands education. The increase in literacy reflected the general increase of female education in the country. Both womens autonomy and the involvement with credit-based income generating program had positive and statistically significant effects on contraceptive use regardless of the demographic and socioeconomic differences between women in the villages. Accessibility to credit sources increased the womens autonomy to 28% (p < 0.05) when the years of schooling was controlled. When the age and socioeconomic variables were added the effects of the involvement in credit programs on womens autonomy diminished. Contraceptive acceptance had statistically significant relationships with the sociodemographic characteristics of women regardless of their involvement with credit-based income generating activities. Model I indicated that the probability of using contraceptives rose to 89% if the women had more autonomy than others when age and the number of children were controlled. Model II showed that nonusers of contraception involved in the credit program after 1986 were 62% more likely to accept any contraceptive than women who did not receive any credit controlling for autonomy age and the number of living children. The effects of autonomy on contraceptive use consistently remained strong in all three models indicating that sociodemographic variability by womens autonomy in the study population was minimal." @default.
