- W2609421799 abstract "Carbon fibers (CFs) are among the strongest and stiffest fiber reinforcements available commercially for composite materials. Of various precursors used to produce CFs, this chapter focuses on mesophase pitch (MP). Although not the major type of precursor, MP holds the potential of producing cost-competitive CFs, especially when the precursor is produced from petroleum residues. Also, melt spinning of pitch precursors is a cost-effective and scalable process that can satisfy the increased demand for CFs in the cost-sensitive industrial sector such as automotive and industrial applications. The processing of pitch-based CFs consists of three basics steps: melt spinning, thermo-oxidative stabilization, and high temperature carbonization/graphitization. The thermoplastic pitch is melted, extruded through a spinneret and drawn into fibers. In the oxidative stabilization, the as-spun fibers are rendered infusible by reaction with oxygen at temperatures in the range 200–350°C. High temperature heat treatment in the range 1000–3000°C removes noncarbon elements (accompanied by about 30 wt% loss) and develops partial graphitic crystallinity within CFs. Process conditions during melt spinning lead to a preferred orientation of carbon crystallites along the fiber axis and impart outstanding tensile modulus (exceeding 500 GPa), thermal conductivity (approaching 1000 W m−1 K−1), but moderate tensile strength (about 3 GPa)." @default.
