- W2609677649 abstract "Objective : Studies on the anatomical and histological structure of the triangular fibrocartilagenous complex (TFCC) of the wrist are few. The attachments of the disc to the radius and ulna are not clear. Whether the disc is attached to bone or cartilage is not certain. This is important because it might affect the stability of the joint. Methods : Ten wrist joints on each side of five cadavers, three males and two females (50-70) years of age were dissected. In half of the specimens the lower end of the radius and ulna as well as the TFCC were carefully dissected from the palmar surface of the wrist. In the other half, parts of the lower ends of the radius and the TFFC were removed by severing the extensor tendons and opening the wrist joint dorsally. The radius and ulna were sawn transversally 1-2 cm proximal to the TFCC. Samples of tissues were processed for histological studies. Results : The articular disc, the volar and dorsal radioulnar ligaments, the homologue of the ulnocarpal meniscus, the sheath of extensor carpi ulnaris, the ulnocarpal ligaments and the ulnar collateral ligaments were easily seen macroscopically. In all specimens the articular disc arises from the radius as a fibro -cartilaginous extension of the superficial zone of hyaline articular cartilage. It arises from the sharp border between the two articular surfaces and is thus not directly attached to bone. Conclusion : The articular disc is not attached directly to bone. It is continuous with the articular cartilage of the distal radioulnar joint. *Corresponding author: E-Mail: mabuoaf@yahoo.com" @default.
