Engineeringdevelopment of the APALSTM system began October1992 culminating in the pre-production AdvancedDevelopment Model (ADM) system currently undergoingflight testing.The paper focuses on the Cat III accuracy andintegrity requirements defined by ICAO, Annex 10 [l]and the Required Navigation Performance (RNP) TunnelConcept [2]. The resulting ADM architecture developedto meet them is described. The primary measurement ismade with the aircraft’s weather radar and provides rangeand range rate information to the ADM necessary toupdate the precision navigation state vector. The systemuses stored terrain map data as references for mapmatching with Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) maps.A description of the Pre-Production flight testprogram is included. Testing is being conducted at sixdifferent airports around the country demonstratingsystem performance in various environmental conditions(precipitation, heavy foliage, sparse terrain, over waterand turbulence).ADM flight test results of 131 successful CAT IIhand-flown approaches at Albuquerque, NM andRichmond, VA are presented. Detailed statisticalanalysis of these results indicate that the APALSTMsystem meets the RNP for Cat III." @default.
