- W2610436818 abstract "This paper examines the models and paths that KIBS use when they go global. Based on literature, we divide the models to actual business operations (FDI, exports and operations through third parties) and to indirect activities that may prepare international business (e.g. serving foreign clients in the home country). Among the paths, we identify three basic types: 1) following a client to foreign markets, 2) independent gradual internationalisation, and 3) a ‘born global’ path. Our case study, consisting off an international sample and a Finnish sample, indicates that combining various models is common in KIBS. Some models, like licensing, seem to enable the breakdown of the simultaneity of production and consumption in services. Our study also highlights the importance of indirect models of internationalisation as a way of specialisation, for instance. Regarding the paths, we found several examples of the ‘born global’ -path, which is quite a new approach. IT-enabled exports are one factor that favours this path." @default.
