Introduction How did you get my tree in that bottle? a harvester quizzically asked Boswellness founder Mahdi Ibrahim. Ibrahim was in Northern Somalia on one of his regular visits to his native country as part of his work for his Vermont-based company Boswellness. Boswellness, owned and staffed by Ibrahim, Jaime Garvey, Bill Lanzetta and Casey Lyon, distilled, packaged, and distributed products made from organic tree resins called frankincense and myrrh. Boswellness sourced its frankincense (Latin names; Boswellia Carteria and Frereana) and myrrh (Latin name; Commiphora Myrrha) tree resins from local harvesters in and sold the resins directly for use as incense. Resins were also distilled to produce essential oils and hydrosol. company's Commiphora Myrrha and Frereana oils were sold as antiinflammatories, natural colognes, and immunostimulants while its hydrosol products were sold for cosmetic purposes including facial toner and acne treatment. According to Ibrahim, the majority of sales were made to other businesses. Approximately 90% of our sales are B2B, he said. The only direct consumer sales we do are through our website's online store. On its website (http://www.boswellness.com/), the company noted that all of its products were Distilled in Vermont with Certified Organic Resin from Somaliland (Boswellness, 2015). Appendix A is a description of the company's products and their respective uses. Founded in 2005, Boswellness obtained Organic Certification in 2010 and was now questioning whether Fair Trade certification would document the company's commitment to giving back to its harvesters in and add value to its credibility in the marketplace. While Organic Certification conveyed product quality, Fair Trade certification could document the firm's social commitment. In fact, there was a natural overlap between two certifications. In 2009, 47 percent of Fair Trade U.S. imports were also certified organic (Lagorio-Chafkin, 2011). As part of their debate, Ibrahim, Garvey, Lanzetta and Lyon believed that Boswellness was already a socially responsible company committed to doing the right thing. If that were the case, would Fair Trade certification matter? Additionally, they wondered what was involved in the Fair Trade certification process and how much certification would cost. Boswellness History In January 2004 Mahdi Ibrahim recounted his desire to make an impact back I was lucky to get out of and get educated in the west, he said. I always wanted to be an entrepreneur and do something that could help back home. He recalled his mother burning the raw resin of the Boswellia tree in the house as natural incense. With this in mind, Ibrahim formulated an idea of how he could improve the economy and well-being of the citizens of Somaliland, while making a livable wage for himself and his wife, Jamie Garvey, in Vermont. Both Ibrahim and Garvey concluded that by importing the raw resin of frankincense to Burlington Vermont, they had potential to sell the product to small, niche vendors in the area, mainly focused on stores that distributed other, more commercial, brands of incense. Their first contract was with Garcia's Tobacco Shop, located in the retail hub of Burlington known as Church Street. Garcia's was known for their selection of cigars, pipe tobacco, and tobacco products. Initially, Ibrahim and Garvey operated as Ismael Imports, a limited liability corporation that sold two frankincense resins, as well as unsee (oon-cee), a sugar based incense, exclusively to Garcia's. …" @default.
