- W2611491339 abstract "Relatively recently Kuwait began a considerable rapid demographic and socioeconomic transition as evidenced by a low infant mortality ( 70 years) and reduced socioeconomic differentials between social classes. In 1992 in Kuwait where more than 97% of the population is urban researchers interviewed 293 women who were 15-49 years old and attended 6 primary health clinics throughout the country and 206 husbands attending primary health clinics to determine and compare contraceptive use knowledge and attitudes between Bedouins and Kuwaitis. The women tended to be more educated and more likely to be employed than the general population. Bedouin women were more likely to be illiterate (43 vs. 5%) not work (20 vs. 70%) marry at a younger age (19.1 vs. 20.4 years) have more children (4.8 vs. 3.8) and to have a higher ideal family size (7 vs. 5.7) than non-Bedouins. Overall contraceptive ever use rate was high (86%) even though fertility was high and the ideal family size was large indicating that contraceptives were largely used for birth spacing. Bedouins had lower ever-use and current use rates than non-Bedouins (78 vs. 93% and 42 vs. 66% respectively). The most popular method still was oral contraceptives (61% for Bedouins and 83% for non-Bedouins). Only 4.8% of women had undergone sterilization and none of the men had undergone vasectomy. Religious reasons explained the low use of sexual sterilization. High fertility and large ideal family size probably would continue in light of the pronatalist policies and ideals in Kuwait. Yet contraceptive use may increase as more women become educated resulting in a slight decrease in fertility as suggested by the fact that the ideal family size for university-educated women was smaller than that for illiterate women (5.5 vs. 8.5)." @default.
