This chapter describes the epidemiological relationships of antisaliva antibody responses and blood-feeding arthropod density that gave birth to the concept of salivary biomarkers of human exposure to Anopheles bites. Approaches, techniques, and methods used to develop and validate specific candidate-biomarkers of exposure to Anopheles mosquito bites are highlighted with a focus on their potential applications in malaria-endemic areas. Development of this salivary biomarker into a rapid diagnostic test, such as a malaria rapid diagnostic test, will enable rapid and easy detection in finger prick blood of human antibodies to Anopheles gSG6-P1 salivary peptide. Such an assay will allow operational research (identification of populations at risk of malaria, survey of area for malaria elimination, evaluation of vector control strategies) by national malaria control programs for better control of malaria." @default.
