- W2611883913 abstract "The extensive use of anti-tank (ATM) and anti-personnel (APM) mines in countries such as Bosniaand Cambodia has heightened the necessity ofenhancing existing minesweeping systems withprecise positioning. Current methods of detecting, marking, and relocating mines and minefields areprimarily manual in nature and suffer from the needto physically mark, manually keep track of, andpersonally avoid ordnance in the field. Attempts toreduce the personal risk in mine placement andrecovery by developing autonomous vehicles requirea means for precise navigation. No one technologyor “silver bullet” [7,9] exists in enhancing the abilityof the military to place and recover/avoid mines. The application of GPS to assist in the minetieldequation of marking, locating, and navigating hasrecently been discussed and deemed not acceptableexcept in the positioning of general field locations[6,7]. This focus is on the accuracy of a sinale GPSreceiver and taints the true benefit of GPS viaassisted or augmented techniaues. This marriage ofassisted GPS to the minefield application is arelatively new concept and should be examined inearnest. This paper presents an analysis of the benefits ofGPS to the minefield equation by examining currentminelaying and sweeping history, methodology, andtechniques. Recommendations from this analysisare used to develop a position countering theconcept that GPS is not precise enough forminefield use, with solutions to remaining limitationsand future enhancement techniques in usingassisted or even autonomous GPS presented. Thisanalysis is supported by the development of acarrier phase based prototype system based on thestandard DOD PLGR (Precision Lightweight GPSReceiver) architecture. The prototype demonstratesthe ability to perform real-time rapid singlecentimeter to decimeter level static and kinematicsurveys within a target minefield over varyingbaselines and satellite geometries. Accuracies andlessons learned from the system are presented insupport of continuing study and to encourage theimmediate application of GPS to the variouscomponents of the minefield equation." @default.
