- W2611953777 abstract "Lathom-Radocy, W. B. (2014). Pediatric Music Therapy (2nd Edition). Springfield: Charles C. Thomas Publisher.I have been working with young children since I graduated as a qualified music therapist. Working in an interdisciplinary team, I have been continuing to search for the most effective and supportive ways that a music therapist can contribute in this environment and how I can integrate the varied strands of mutual communication; playful and musical physical activity; and accurate, informative documentation in my work. When I was offered the opportunity to write this review, I was very excited at the prospect of gaining useful insights and practical guidance for my work from this book. This book is the second edition after being first published in 2002, and contains updates to some of the original medical information and the addition of more music-therapy-related literature. In part, its focus is the health and education systems in the US and this second edition has been written in light of US legislative changes such as the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. (This Act was recently replaced by 201 5's Every Student Succeeds Act, and this change will undoubtedly influence future editions.)This is a handbook for clinicians and also may be used as a primary or supplemental textbook in classes to prepare music therapy students to work with children who have disabilities. It has a strong focus on the use of the 'CAMEOS' model to address the child's communication, academic, motor, emotional, organisational, and social needs (Eagle, 1982, p.21). The book can be divided into three sections. Chapters 1 and 2 describe the process of assessment and description of goals in music therapy using the CAMEOS model, which leads to the design of the music therapy portion of the IEP (Individual Education Plan) or care plan. The next section (Chapters 3-1 2) focuses on presentations of medical and psychological characteristics unique to various groups, and the specific goals and procedures that can be used in music therapy. These chapters also provide literature regarding certain common and uncommon medical conditions. The final section includes procedures for implementing music therapy, with an emphasis on the characteristics of children with various impairments, including those related to speech and language, sight, hearing, orthopaedic issues and other health conditions.Although this book is well written and presented, there are few points that I would like to address as a New Zealand clinician who has a diverse working environment and range of experiences. Firstly, the information on accessing the health system, grants/funding and educational programmes is US-centric. Thus, the content can sometimes be rather confusing and would generally be irrelevant for New Zealand audiences. However, I personally found value in this comparative international context, as well as being reminded of the significance of music therapy in different settings such as mainstream schools, special education programmes, hospital care and home-based services.Furthermore, the title of the book seemed to me to limit the range of likely readers, as it leads to the expectation of discovering specific knowledge, methods and techniques in the use of music therapy particularly in relation to young children. …" @default.
