- W2613019671 abstract "Complexity, as the author’s thesis and theoretical framework reveal, is the “Sixth Competitive Force” that shapes strategy in turbulent environments. Mastering complexity sets forth the very emergent strategies that construct and explain evolution. Thus, this work delivers a response to the vital challenges that have challenged the foundations of the most powerful institutions of our time. Not only have the crises disrupted diverse industries, but above all they have challenged the most powerful doyen of strategy, namely Michael Porter and his co-founded consultancy firm, “The Monitor Group”, on whose groundbreaking work this research is based. Hence, the strategic battles and challenges of the future will be fought beyond the boundaries of industry-in views and mere the economic dimensions of organizations realities. Masquerading deep rooted systemic flaws as other crises as they actually are, prescribing linear remedies to the dynamics of the upcoming waves of the future challenges, and designing strategies based on the data of the past, whereupon the contemporary organizations are navigated, is as asking the navigator to steer based on rearview-mirror. The current work addresses strategic challenges from a holistic and cybernetic perspective; it examines the Porter’s Model since the inception of the field of competitive strategy by Porter from 1979-2014. The author’s thesis reveals that the Porterian Weltanschauung although still considered as a correct view but it is incomplete and of limited dimension of applicability to the challenges organizations have to cope with today. The author proposes a holistic Weltanschauung on the basis of systems sciences and cybernetics, which deliver many robust and viable models, whereupon strategists can navigate their organization in the turbulences and systemic inter-dependability of today’s business landscape." @default.
