- W2613076075 abstract "Mobile computing and communications devices are becoming ubiquitous in the United States and the developed nations of the world. Young people between the ages of 5 and 19 are major consumers of these devices. Ironically, US schools have, for the most part, banned mobile devices such as cell phones from classrooms. It is predicted that there will be a major clash between the cellphone-computer-carrying youth and the educational establishment in the next two to three years. The former will win and cause a major disruption in education. This chapter discusses the coming disruption and how educators and human-computer interaction professionals might prepare themselves to more positively take advantage of this coming event. Indeed, mobile technology is the opportunity that will enable economically disadvantaged urban schools to break out of the cycle of disrepair and despair. Mobile technology is low cost but powerful. Mobile technology need not be purchased by the schools but will be brought into the schools by the children themselves; schools will need to organize and orchestrate its usage. It is estimated that 95%—virtually everything—of what a 5- to 13-year-old needs to do in school can be done on a cell-phone computer, whereas the demanding content for 14- to 18-year-olds reduces that percentage to 80%. For starters, in the first year of cell-phone computer adoption, the teacher can simply replace paper and pencil with the digital technology. There is thus ample evidence that schools can and will ignore the mobile computing revolution like the personal computer revolution and then the Internet revolution. However, the schools adopting the mobile computing transition would need to address several issues such as a vision of the future for the technology in education, funding, personnel supportive of the technology, expectations, and outcomes." @default.
