- W2613218275 abstract "Anxiety is a common phenomenon of everyday life. It plays a crucial role in human life because all of us experience anxiety in different ways. A person who suffers from anxiety may not be able to devote his full energy in the performance of a task. Anxiety interferes with the activity leading to impedement in learning. This notion, however, is based on an erroneous understanding of the role of anxiety. Every individual has a vast array of attiudes. Some of them have been deliberately cultivated through the school. As individual grows, his cognition, feelings and action tendencies with respect to various objects in his psychological world into enduring system called attitudesAcademic anxietyFor the purpose of this study, the term academic anxiety has been taken as conceptualized by Bisht (1987), that is, academic stress reflects a subject's perception as well as his way of coping with academic events; it reflects subjective feelings of distress or interpersonal perceptual responses. Mukherjee (2003) points at academic anxiety as the outcome of innumerable tangible and non-tangible factors, such as age, socio economic status, number of siblings, ordinal position, parental attitude and child rearing practices. According to Jindal (2005), the causes of parental pressure are such as - to perform and to stand out among other children, under performers, overburdening school system, overscheduled student, tensions and depressions related to their growing up lead to frustration, physical stress, aggression, undesirable complexes, depression, shyness, too much attention seekers, jealousy and loneliness. When effortless learning does not take place, students loose confidence, motivation and interaction, and this creates more stress (Papia, Olds and Feldman, 1998). Another cause of academic stress among adoloscents is the increasing rates of tutions. An average Indian school going child in the age group of six to seventeen spends approximately six to seven hours in school, two to four hours in tutions, and one to two hours in commuting. Homework generally consumes two to three more hours. Hence, there is no time left for fun and games, which are intrinsic parts of childhood (Gupta, 2002).Study habitsStudy habits are practices of buying out a dedicated scheduled and un-interrupted time to apply one's self to the task of learning. Crede and Kuncel (2008) define study habits as study routines, including, but not restricted to, frequency of studying sessions, review of material, self-testing, rehearsal of learned material, and studying in conducive environment. It is crucial that parents and teachers should inculcate the seed of hard work and good study habits in our young generations.AttitudeAnastasi ( 1990) defined attitude as a tendency to react favourably or unfavourably toward a designated class of stimuli. Attitudes cannot be directly observed, but must be inferred from overt behavior, both verbal and non-verbal.High and low academic achieversA high academic achiever is the individual who has channellised his potential so much that he achieves more than what he expects to achieve; conversely, a low achiever is the one whose academic performance is strikingly lower than what one would expect from intelligence test scores. Such a student is a challenge to teachers and researchers because his IQ suggests that he has the ability to do better in the classroom than what his marks would indicate. According to Bainbridge (2000), high achievers are those who had achieved a goal. In school, a high achiever would be a student who gets high marks and good grades. They are not necessarily gifted, but often externally motivated.Urban, rural and slum localesAn urban area is characterized by higher population density and vast human features in comparison to areas surrounding it. Urban areas may be cities, town or metropolitan cities. Rural area is sparsely populated area outside of the limits of a city or town or a designated commercial, industrial, or residential center; are characterized by farms, vegetation, and open spaces. …" @default.
