Since then,GIOVE-B has continued to transmit dual-frequency Lbandnavigation signals on a routine operational basis.GIOVE-B is the European Space Agency’s (ESA’s)second Galileo In-Orbit Validation Element satellite andserves as an in-orbit demonstrator for Europe’s Galileosatellite navigation system, currently under construction.The prime contractor and payload prime for GIOVE-Bwas EADS Astrium (Germany and UK respectively),supported by Thales Alenia Space (Italy) for satelliteassembly, integration and test.The historic 2008 launch of the 500kg (1100lb) satellitemarked the culmination of an often complex satelliteintegration and test campaign, in the course of which thesatellite performance was verified under demandingenvironmental conditions, and the signal generationcapability was extensively upgraded just a few monthsbefore launch.The principal mission objectives of GIOVE-B are tomaintain the frequency filings for the Galileo program,evaluate critical payload technologies required forGalileo, characterize the orbit radiation environment, andenable early signal experimentation. The development,verification and in-orbit operation of this satellite hasgenerated vast amounts of valuable information andlessons learned across all project disciplines, includingsatellite assembly, integration and testing, as well asmission analysis, launch and early orbit operations, andin-orbit testing (IOT). Knowledge and experiencegarnered from GIOVE-B is now being applied directly tothe current and future phases of the Galileo program.GIOVE-B is providing invaluable in-orbit experience forsatellite equipments which have no previous flightheritage. GIOVE-B carries the world’s first orbitingPassive Hydrogen Maser (PHM); an atomic clock thatoffers fundamental advantages in terms of its superlativeaccuracy and minimal drift. GIOVE-B is also the firstsatellite to transmit the MBOC (Multiplexed BinaryOffset Coding) modulation standard from space.The high performance of the payload and its equipmentsis directly related to the high-quality service that will bedelivered by the forthcoming Galileo operationalconstellation, and consequently full validation in-orbit iscrucially important.Throughout IOT the transmitted navigation signals weremeasured using two independent ground stations.Navigation signal broadcasts have continued on a routinebasis since the completion of the IOT campaign and thesatellite has demonstrated excellent availability andconsistent performance.This paper describes how the GIOVE-B satellite designsatisfied the mission requirements, with particularemphasis on the navigation payload performance andfunctionality, and highlights some of the manufacturingand qualification challenges that were met over the courseof the project." @default.
