- W2614548596 abstract "Apologies are gaining increasing attention in literature on leadership, but little attention is being given to how apologies affect the transgressor. We use moral emotions as an indicator of the effect of apologies on the individual who commits the transgression. By doing so, we examine how leaders and followers differ in their emotions after apologizing. Data were collected from 591 individuals in an experimental study. Results showed that leaders felt stronger negative emotions after apologizing, compared to not apologizing. Followers, however, felt the same level of negative moral emotions, regardless of the apology. Also, leaders felt more guilt after a reactive apology, while followers experienced more guilt after a proactive apology. Finally, the stronger negative emotions felt by a leader after apologizing were only present when the locus of control for the transgression was external." @default.
