- W2615102987 abstract "Pyla-Kokkinokremos, located just to the east of Larnaca Bay on top of a naturally fortified plateau, represents a singularly short-lived settlement in the island’s Late Bronze Age history. Established only a few decades prior to its eventual abandonment in the early 12th c. BC, the settlement represents a very valuable ‘time capsule’ of the Late Cypriot IIC-IIIA critical phase. The site was explored on several previous occasions, respectively by P. Dikaios, 1952; V. Karageorghis, 1981-1982; V. Karageorghis and A. Kanta, 2010-2011; Kanta, 2012-2013 (Karageorghis & Demas 1984; Karageorghis & Georgiou 2010; Karageorghis & Kanta 2014). Since 2014 Kokkinokremos is the object of a joint venture between the UGhent (J. Bretschneider), the UCLouvain (J. Driessen) and the Mediterranean Archaeological Society (A. Kanta) (Bretschneider, Kanta & Driessen 2015 & forthcoming).Intensive excavations suggest that the entire plateau of ca. 7 ha was densely occupied; excavated parts of the settlement were laid out regularly within a perimeter ‘casemate’ wall and appears to suggest that the establishment of the settlement was a deliberate and planned enterprise. Evidence for special function locations has been revealed; e.g. metal production and domestic industries related to textiles in Sector 3. The 2012 excavations yielded two tablets inscribed in Cypro-Minoan near the gate in Sector 4. Rich floor deposits, present throughout the settlement, including undoubtedly precious ceramic vessels and alabaster vases, seem to indicate that the abandonment process was precipitous. Hoards of valuables, on the other hand, are frequent as shown by previous campaigns. Important new finds are a hidden alabaster vase containing prestige objects from Sector 3 and an assemblage of bronzes from Sector 5. The inhabitants’ intention to return seems unmistakable, but it never occurred. The recent excavations have also confirmed the abandonment date suggested by an Argive deep bowl from the 2010-2011 excavation dated to LHIIIC Early, ca. 1175-1170 BC. A further deep bowl from Sector 4 dates to LHIIIC Early as well. Finally, the multi-ethnic character of the finds from the Kokkinokremos settlement has been verified with references to Sardinia, Crete, Egypt, Anatolia, the Syro-Palestinian coast, Mycenaean Greece and specifically the Argolid. The question of who founded the settlement at this specific, strategic position between the southern end of the Larnaca bay and the fertile hinterland, close to Late Bronze Age Kition (and Hala Sulta Tekke) and Enkomi and why it was abandoned suddenly and relatively soon afterwards, remain tantalizing questions which research at Kokkinokremos has yet to answer." @default.
