- W2615149531 abstract "Abstract In this study, two widely used natural fibres, cellulose based flax and protein based wool, have been selected to compare the flammability and mechanical characteristics of polypropylene composites reinforced with each fibre. Different chemical compositions and crystallinity states between flax and wool have been identified by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction, respectively. It has been highlighted that the better char forming ability of wool over flax has achieved a significant reduction of peak heat release rate and the self-extinguishment in combination with intumescent flame retardant. On the contrary, flax composites have exhibited better tensile and flexural properties compared to those of wool composites due to the superior mechanical properties of flax. The effective role of a double-mixing process by a twin-screw extruder in enhancing both flame retardant and mechanical performance of the resulting composites has also been addressed." @default.
