- W2615661702 abstract "In this Journal Pagliano and colleagues 1 Pagliano P. Attanasio V. Rossi M. Carleo M.A. Carannante N. Ascione T. Listeria monocytogenes meningitis in the elderly: Distinctive characteristics of the clinical and laboratory presentation. J Infect. 2015; : 134-135 Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (22) Google Scholar reported their experience with Listeria disease in hospitalized elderly individuals. We conducted a retrospective observational study with the aim to analyse the current clinical and epidemiological characteristics of Listeria monocytogenes bacteraemia (LMB) and to determine possible changes in the incidence and the epidemiology along the last eleven years in the area of influence of the Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre; a 1300 bed facility serving a mean of population around 350,000 in southern Madrid (Spain). All cases of bacteraemia by L. monocytogenes were identified by the Microbiology database. Clinical records were reviewed in order to collect demographic and clinical data. The immunosuppressive therapy was classified into two categories: corticosteroids and non-steroidal immunosuppressive therapy. Mortality was defined as death during the hospital admission in patients with LMB. Blood samples were incubated in the System BacT/ALERT 3D (Biomerieux, France). The identification and antimicrobial susceptibility was performed by the Systems WIDER® (Soria Melguizo, Madrid, Spain), MicroScan Walkway® (Siemens, California, USA) and since 2014 by MALDI-TOF-MS (Bruker Daltonics, Bremen, Germany). Data were analysed from January 2004 to December 2014 and divided into two proportional periods: period 1 (January 2004–December 2009) and period 2 (January 2010–December 2014). Comparisons were performed using the t-test or the Mann–Whitney U-test for continuous variables, and the χ2 or Fisher's exact test for categorical parameters. All tests were 2-tailed, and a p-value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. The Odds Ratio (OR) was calculated with 95% confidence interval (CI). The incidence rates of LMB were adjusted by 10,000 admissions/year and by 100,000 inhabitants. The chi for the trend and the statistical analysis were performed using SPSS version 20.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA)." @default.
