- W2615961570 abstract "In the US the black population has experienced the most drastic decline in the presence of the 2-parent husband-wife headed family. The fraction of black families headed by women has grown from its customary percentage of approximately 1/4 in the 1950s to the startling proportion of close to 50% in recent years. The growth of female-headed families among blacks is symptomatic of conditions that lie below the surface of statistics that lead social analysts to trumpet the feminization of poverty. These phenomena are linked to the precarious status of the black male which in turn draws attention to the precarious status of black America as a whole. Black males are overwhelmingly members of the working class but in particular they are overrepresented in the inactive or surplus portion of the working class. Among their numbers are a large percentage of persons rarely employed deeply entrenched in poverty most likely to be imprisoned most likely to be the militarys foot soldiers and least likely to have a sense of optimism about the opportunities offered to them by American society. The lack of a place in contemporary society for black males finds its most dramatic manifestation in the declining pool of available male partners for black women. Black males are many times more likely to be found in the prisons than white males; they are also overrepresented in the state and county mental hospitals. Drugs also take their toll. Black Army enrollment increased from 15.6% in 1972 to 32.5% in 1980 but they are crowded into the Armys least desirable jobs. Marginal men make marginal fathers." @default.
