- W2616058091 abstract "Previous studies have demonstrated an increase in ureteral tonus at a distance of 15, 20, and 25 cm. above the ureterovesical junction during human pregnancy. No changes were noted at 10 and 5 cm. These results suggest that the increase in ureteral tonus is due to the obstruction which results from the compression exerted by the enlarged uterus. The effects of different positions and of fetal delivery upon the ureteral tonus at various levels were studied in pregnant women near term. When pregnant patients lie on the side opposite to that of the ureter under study, tonus decreases at 15 cm.; when they lie on the same side, it does not change. Neither lateral position modifies the tonus in the nonpregnant patient. During cesarean section a rapid decrease in ureteral tonus is seen coincident with the delivery of the fetus. Tonus is higher at 15 cm. than at 10 and 5 cm. in pregnant women in the dorsal position; there are no differences between 10 and 5 cm. in this position. Ureteral tonus is similar at these three levels in nonpregnant women. It is concluded that the increase in ureteral tonus during pregnancy is due to compression and obstruction of the ureter by the pregnant uterus. This occurs between 15 and 10 cm., probably against the pelvic inlet." @default.
