- W2616061433 abstract "Language is a key for communication in the society. Many big cities, for example Surabaya, have a multilingual society consisting of ethnic groups, cultures, and languages in a Buddhist wedding ceremony, for example, several languages are used. Since several languages are used in one event, code switching often occurs. The objective of this study are to find out what languages are used in Buddhist wedding ceremony, when the code switching happens, and why those codes are used in the ceremony. This study is a qualitative research since the writer does not set out to test hypothesis but observes and interview, the language uttered by the subjects under study. The subjects of this study are Romo Pandita, Bhikkhu, the parents of the bride and the bridegroom, the bride herself and the guests. The writer acts as an observer and records the conversation.Using closely related participants, formal setting and wedding ceremony, the writer analyzed the data, and finally she presented the reasons, which influenced Bhikkhu and Pandita to use several languages. The writer also foundout when Romo Pandita and Bhikkhu do the code switching and the reasons of using the different languages. They used those codes because they need to share group identity and solidarity, to maintain the smoothness of the ceremony, to be well understood, to tease the bride and the bridegroom, to express emotion, one's habit or preference, the lack of vocabulary and also there are no other terms usually used for the word gobyos. The explanation above shows the codes used in Buddhist wedding ceremony, and it also informs the reader when Bhikkhu and Pandita switched the code. At the end of the explanation it explains about the reasons of using thecodes that the writer found from observation and interviews of the subjects." @default.
