- W2616243756 abstract "Responding to speculation that men in some populations may prefer a larger-than-standard condom design user preference and condom comfort fit and retention were studied among current condom users in Ghana Kenya and Mali. While the U.S. Agency for International Development currently distributes 49mm and 52mm standard condoms 52mm and 55mm layflat width Ansell latex condoms were compared in this study of 100 participants from both Ghana and Mali and 75 from Kenya. Recruited from a pharmacy in Ghana an industrial clinic at a General Motors factory in Kenya and a family planning clinic in Mali each man received 1 condom of each size to be used over the study period. Participants were not informed that differences existed between the 2 designs. Most men did however notice the 3mm size difference between condoms. The standard 52mm version was preferred in Ghana and Kenya while the 55mm design was preferred in Mali. Approximately 1/3 of the users in each country preferred the condom size not chosen by the respective majority. Those preferring the 52mm condom cited its snug fit better sensitivity and heightened sense of security as important determinant factors in their choice. Those opting for the larger design stressed heightened sensitivity and comfort over fit as contributory factors for their choice in addition to a greater sense of strength and roominess. Overall failure rates for both designs were higher than predicted from laboratory test data. No significant differences in breakage and slippage rates between the 2 condoms were however found both within each country and for all 3 countries combined. Study results do not indicate whether preference for a given condom design is related to either cultural or anatomical factors. Studies of other population samples in these and other countries are suggested to further examine the determinants of condom breakage and slippage. Uncircumcised men should be included as subsets in these sample populations. Finally user preference should be accommodated through the provision of different condom sizes and designs." @default.
