- W2616504881 abstract "Introduction: Annual breast cancer mortality rate in Serbia is 26.7/100,000 women, thus becoming second most frequent cause of death, right after coronary and cardiovascular diseases. By comparing data, it was concluded that breast cancer development depends on environmental factors. Aim is to register breast cancer risk factors in different age groups, as well as to determine the importance of certain factors by comparison with a control group of healthy females. Method: In the observation study 120 women with breast cancer examined at the Oncology and Radiology Institute were polled between December 2002 and May 2003. By match-set method other 120 women not diagnosed with breast cancer, who showed up for their regular gynecological exam at the Health Centre in New Belgrade were also polled. The common characteristic of the two groups was age. Statistical data analysis was conducted using the x2 test for 2x2 contingency tables and factor of freedom DF=1. Result: Breast cancer incidence is 99% female population and only 1% males with Klinefelter Syndrome. Almost half of newly discovered breast cancers (48%) was registered in the age group above 65. It was found that being single for women, late menopause, late pregnancy, higher number of terminated pregnancies, chronic inflamation of the ovary and benign uterine and breast tumors are significant risk factors. Statistically less important factors are chemical contraception and obesity. Conclusion: Breast cancer is a multicausal disease, a combination of a number of exogen and endogen pathogens. With technology and medical advances we have managed to discover the weaknesses of this enemy and to fight against it more efficiently." @default.
