- W261681194 abstract "It has been found that there are limits to the single-neuron approach to problems in neurobiology. For most of the organisms that have large neurons, genetic studies are difficult because of the long generation times involved. There is difficulty in gaining large amounts of material (large numbers of individual cells) for purification and sophisticated biochemical analysis of individual proteins. With Aplysia and many other invertebrates with large neuron somas, the actual synaptic connections are small, and the anatomy of the neuropile very complex. This limits certain kinds of studies of one of the most important aspects of neuron function. Moreover, there is no single preparation or approach that will serve to answer the variety of questions, which have been formulated in neurobiology. Also, protein synthesis and metabolism may also play a role in some of the more plastic aspects of neuron function reaffirming the need for advancements to be made in the field of protein study." @default.
