- W2617164602 abstract "Human interaction with other people and with their surroundings occurs through the senses. The lack of one or several senses deteriorates the quality of life. Deafblind people have a severe degree of combined visual and auditory impairment resulting in problems with communication, access to information and mobility. Several devices are available to improve deafblind people life quality. One of the best methods to obtain this, is the use of haptic displays. However each of these presents some limitations and are not affordable to everyone. This results in a need of new technologies that satisfy the requirements of the costumers. The aim of this work is to design, build and test a tactile display to read text in Braille language, which supports deafblind users in accessing information and create the possibility to communicate independently. To this purpose, the developed device is based on electrostimulation of the skin. This give us the possibility to implement a simpler device, which will be portable, customizable and smaller and lighter than other commercial technologies. Because choice of stimulus waveform is an important design criterion for a practical tactile information display, in this work has been proposed a prototype to create four different electrical waveforms. For each one of this, is possible to configure voltage, frequency and duty cycle. This device was tested in six person combining the different parameters of stimulation. The results of the proposed approach reveal that it is possible to recognize a character in Braille based on the electrostimulation of the skin." @default.
