- W2617173017 abstract "At the end of the 1950’s, while “modern” urbanism was already put into practice in a large number of French cities to face the housing shortage, critics arose in the population, the intelligentsia and among young architects. The emergence of this architectural and urban crisis —which will uncork in the 1970’s on a rediscovery of the question of the city, the history, and the foundations of the architectural discipline — is experienced and fed by the generation of intellectual architects trained in the 1950’s and 1960’s at the National School of Fine Arts. Spectators at first, they became actors of the renewal of their discipline by opening up to all the available knowledge, from technology to human sciences, and from history to systematic methods of conception. The analysis of the review Melpomene, published by the students’ association of the School of Fine Arts until 1966, shows the evolution of the sources used by the young architects, and the transformation of their culture and their representations. Between breaking off and continuity, the themes that the authors tackle with, their vocabulary, their references and their concepts are as many clues of the change: the aspirations which direct it, the guidelines which structure it, the loans and the reinterpretations which feed it, sometimes stemming from their own discipline." @default.
