- W2617360002 abstract "How do managerial interventions influence innovation outcomes? This paper addresses this central question to theorize the influence of five innovation-related managerial interventions (strategic clarity, resources, autonomy, risk aversion, and metrics) on two innovation-related outcomes (faster innovation rollout and industry-leading innovations). We test our theoretical model using data from over 5,600 respondents belonging to 16 business units of a large multinational business group. Consistent with our theoretical model, we find that there is no silver-bullet to attain all possible innovation outcomes, because each managerial intervention involves tradeoffs among outcomes. Our findings help firms understand the differential effects of managerial interventions, and enable managers to focus on the interventions that will help them achieve their specific priorities. Firms that want to prioritize faster innovation rollout should focus on strategic clarity, resourcefulness instead of resources, autonomy, metrics, and risk-taking, but recognize the tradeoff that these intervention may also lessen the likelihood of industry-leading innovations. Firms that want to prioritize industry-leading innovations should define strategies broadly, provide resources, restrict autonomy, emphasize higher risk aversion, and deemphasize metrics, but recognize that these interventions may also slow the pace of innovation. Collectively, these findings provide fresh insights on the complex interdependencies among innovation-related managerial interventions and can assist firms to formulate their innovation priorities and execute their innovation strategies." @default.
