- W2617963140 abstract "Given the vast continent of alternative media objectives and formats, it is unsurprisingthat conceptualising them has taken very different forms. The multidimensionality of‘alternative media’ is indicated (Downing, 2011, 2014) by the pullulating terms in use –not only ‘alternative’ media, but ‘counter-information’ media, ‘tactical’ media, ‘socialmovement’ media, ‘community’ media, ‘citizens’ media, ‘independent’ media, andstill others. This multiplicity does not evince intellectual confusion, but rather theineluctably Protean media practices and purposes under our lens.Yet, if we take Linda-Jean Kenix’s recent exploration of the interpenetrations among‘mainstream’ and ‘alternative’ media (Kenix, 2011) as an important encouragement toeschew rigid compartmentalisation of media into those two categories, then the task ofdefinition becomes more complex still. Her research is very much tilted towardsjournalism and news, but the point is well made. A robust illustration of Kenix’s argument is Hakan Thorn’s splendid study of the transnational anti-apartheid movement, which traces four overlapping modes of media communication, from mainstream toindependent, deployed over a period of four decades (Thorn, 2006). We should notrely on either media scale or funding sources in order to pinpoint our object of study. My own work has been rather narrowly obsessed with the relation between mediaof all kinds and struggles for social justice, and against racism and war. I have neverenvisaged the much more macroscopic agenda that Chris Atton, for example, hasaddressed in his Alternative Media (2001) and elsewhere, engaging in the study ofsmall-scale media as a dimension of the anthropology of culture. Nonetheless, somedefinition, conceptualisation and/or metaphors are needed. In what follows, my primaryconcern is with metaphors relevant to the subset of alternative media that I haveconcentrated on, namely social movement media – but I think the discussion willalso be relevant to a wider zone still, if not to the entire ‘continent’." @default.
