- W2618014716 abstract "This paper describes efforts made to facilitate the use of UML based tools (e.g. Booch et al, 1999) in time-sensitive and dependable distributed applications. Those efforts are based on theories developed and applied for analysing timing properties of time-constraint concurrent software. They also include development, testing and (partial) integration of a software engineering tool (dedicated to formal timing analysis of software) to the suite of UML based tools. The resulting complex is under test (in Systems and Software Engineering Laboratory at Tallinn Technical University), separate tools have been tested in two European Union research projects (CP-94 no. 1577 LIMITS, and ESPRIT 22154 BRIDGE). The usefulness of presented ideas and results are based on consequences that result from introducing a more complex time model into real-time software engineering. The approach described in this paper suggests a practical tool in support of the idea (Xu and Parnas, 2000), that the role of (priority) scheduling is overemphasised in the practice of software development. The most effective stage for starting timing analysis is the specification. The most salient timing errors can, if suitable formalism (e.g. Motus and Rodd, 1994) is used, be discovered already before the design stage starts. This approach assumes, before the specification can be completed and analysed for timing correctness, a thorough systems’ analysis and some understanding of the control theory that is to be used." @default.
