- W2618077369 abstract "The Global Positioning System (GPS) OperationalControl Segment since its inception has collected datafrom 5 GPS Monitor Stations. The Monitor Stations arelocated in Colorado Springs, Ascension Island, DiegoGarcia, Kwajelien Atoll, and Hawaii. The currentlocations provide coverage of GPS satellitesapproximately 98% of the time (when there are noMonitor Station failures). While this coverage wasadequate for the war-fighter of the 8Os, currentapplications, both civilian and military, will benefitfrom increased monitoring capabilities. The United States Air Force has already started toaddress the problem of limited MS coverage by planningthe use of existing Defense Mapping Agency (DMA)GPS monitoring sites as additional data sources. Theuse of additional monitoring sites increases the numberof observations, the spatial diversity of observations, andoffers the opportunity for improved integrity assurance. These extra observations will improve both the clockand ephemeris estimates for the GPS navigationmessage with their incorporation into the operationalKalman filter. But use of the DMA monitoring sites is just thebeginning. There is a need for the Air Force to havegreater redundancy and spatial diversity ofmeasurements, especially in areas of increased militaryresponsibility. This paper explores the concepts andbenefits of a Transportable Monitor Station (TMS). Theability of the GPS Control Segment to get accurate GPSmeasurements close to an area where GPS performanceis critical will enable more accurate and reliableinformation to be provided to the personnel andequipment that need it most.In the simplest form, deployment of one or more TMSsnear, but outside of, the area of responsibility allows theOCS to ensure the integrity of the navigation service forthat area. Using methods such as the Wide Area GPSEnhancement (WAGE), the level of accuracy in thetheater can also be significantly improved. Whereimproved system accuracy is needed, several TMSsalong with a deployable wide-area correction generationand communication system, can be used to provide theentire area of responsibility with secure, highly accurateGPS correction information. This paper will explore the requirements for a TMS,give three different operational scenarios for its use, andprovide two preliminary designs for its implementation." @default.
