- W2618148477 abstract "This paper provides an overviw of the promise and challenges presented by Multiple Pathways—high school reform that prepares all students for both college and careers by creating Multiple Pathways through high school. Multiple Pathways moves beyond the tired debate between the “academic” and “vocational” sides of high school, recognizing that graduates who go directly to work need solid academic skills, and those who go to college will also have careers. It also acknowledges that the twenty-first century economy will forge new relationships between schooling and work, with many Californians learning new skills and changing jobs over the course of their careers, often requiring movement between work, on-the-job training and school to assist in these transitions. Finally, the approach accommodates the unchallenged fact that students benefit when they can apply newly acquired knowledge and skills to real-world situations and problems. UCLA asked some of the state’s leading scholars to review, interpret, and synthesize scholarly research in his/her field that sheds light on whether and how Multiple Pathways might address California’s educational, social, and economic challenges. We also asked them to consider what technical, political, and cultural considerations would shape the course of such reform. In addition, we asked them to write their responses for a broad audience of policymakers, professionals, and other interested Californians. This overview briefly reviews and highlights their findings. According to the scholars included in this collection of papers, Multiple Pathways could address future economic challenges; respond effectively to demographic shifts; improve school achievement, high school graduation rates and access to higher education; increase the educational and work opportunities for vulnerable students; and prepare California’s diverse population of young people for responsible participation in public life. This overview also details many of the challenges that policymakers and educators must confront in order to achieve the benefits of Multiple Pathways. This overview also provides a summary of the wealth of promising policy ideas and recommendations that stem from this collection of papers." @default.
