- W2618452009 abstract "IntroductionIn every country of the world, children are sexually assaulted and sexual assault of children is widely considered as one of the most daunting problems of the modern society. Within the last decade, global discussions on sexual abuse, paedophilia, sexual assault, child pornography, sexual exploitation and other forms of sex-related crimes have grown remarkably in respect of their prevalence, enough to bring about moral panic (Ismail, Joaquim and Gloria, 2012; Lori, Patricia, Robert, & Brian, 2012; Chinawa, Aronu, Chukwu & Obu, 2013; Meichun, Landolt, Maier, Meidert, Schonbucher, Schnyder, 2014; Aborisade & Fayemi, 2015). Children advocacy groups estimate that approximately 1 in 3 girls of the world's children are victims of sexual abuse (Manyike, Chinawa, Aniwada, Odutola, Chinawa, 2015). This has prompted a number of research into sexual abuse of children as a way of confronting the growing scourge.Hitherto, global efforts directed towards understanding the perpetration of child sexual abuse have been confronted by a number of vital and methodological constraints. Indeed, there is a remarkably wide acceptance among researchers that child sexual offending and child sexual offenders are heterogeneous (Aderinto, 2010; Smallbone & Wortley, 2011). This implies that there is high variability both in the manner of perpetration of sexual offenses against children (for example, methods of selecting and grooming the vulnerable children; sexual and other attendant behaviours connected to carrying out the act of abuse; means of avoiding being detected) and the characteristics of the perpetrators themselves (for example, age, education, ethnicity, psychosocial and psychosexual background, relationship with victims, level of sexual interest in children and general involvement in criminality). In Nigeria, there has been a significant increase in the concern and public awareness about child sexual abuse, as the mass media is awash with several incidences of the scourge. However, in spite of the increasing cases of sexual assault on children in the country, the estimation of the rate, just like any form of deviance, remain difficult to make. This is especially the case in Nigeria where rape and other forms of sexual abuse are under-reported, because of the social stigma (Aborisade & Fayemi, 2013; Aborisade, 2014; 2016a), and other forms of secondary victimisation that the victims are exposed to in the country (Aborisade & Vaughan, 2014). Therefore, the possibility of assessing the actual extent of sexual offending is impossible, either in general or with children as victims. More often than not, the estimates of the distribution of sexual offending and victimisation in the country are obtained from forensic sources, that is, samples of those who are arrested or convicted for offenses (Aborisade, 2016b). However, there is consensus among researchers that such sources of statistics on sexual offending only account for a small fraction of all sexual offenders (Terry & Tallon, 2008; Aderinto, 2010; Klein, 2010).Sexual victimisation of children is not a recent phenomenon; however, it was not until the 2000s that child sexual abuse assumed significant consideration as a social concern in Nigeria (Omorodion F. , 2004). Even as at this period, the increasing awareness of the prevalence and deleterious impact of child sexual abuse was in large part due to efforts of nongovernmental agencies who responded to constant reports on the news about the emerging social menace. This has since prompted research, intervention efforts and policy development as measures to check the scourge. However, in spite of the fact that researchers have made substantial contributions to a previously scanty body of literature on child sexual abuse, minimal attention has been given to the juvenile sex offenders. Indigenous criminologists may have being contented with the array of research and explanations made to describe the motives and mechanisms of adult sex offenders in foreign literature or on the pages of local newspapers. …" @default.
