- W2618607170 abstract "Skin thickness and Bone Density Changes in Treated and Untreated Postmenopausal Women and in Women who have Sustained Osteoporotic FracturesBoth the skin dermis and bone matrix have a considerable connective tissue component which is important to maintain their structure and hence, is relevant to their function. A study was conducted to examine the bone density and skin thickness of Four groups of postmenopausal women whose connective tissue may have been significantly influenced by their different oestrogenaemic status. The bone density of the lumbar spine and femoral neck were examined by Dual X-Ray absorptiometry. The skin thickness was measured by a higher resolution ultrasound Osteoson DII (22 MHz). This cross-sectional study involved 127 women who had sustained osteoporotic fractures, two groups of women treated with hormone replacement therapy (403 women were on 0.625 mg conjugated equine oestrogen and 0.15 mg norgestrel taken orally while the other treated group consisted of 32 women on 100mg oestradiol implants), and 474 women acted as controls. The skin thickness in the controls and in the oral hormone replacement therapy groups had a mean thickness of 0.925 mm and 0.93 mm respectively, 0.935 mm in the implant group while that of the osteoporotic group was 0.89 mm. The lumbar spine had a mean density of 0.81 g/cm2 and left hip that of 0.71 g/cm2. The bone density of the control group and hormone replacement therapy group was significantly higher with the lumbar spine having a bone density of 0.93 g/cm2 and that of the hip was 0.82 g/cm2. In conclusion, the bone density and skin thickness appear to be influenced by the hypooestrogenaemic state of the postmenopausal women. The effect of both the ageing process and the menopause on bone density and skin thickness may be due to the impact of both variables on the connective tissue component of both organs." @default.
