- W2620239929 abstract "High school students rarely, if ever, get to read novel about protagonist with disability who is normal, clever, likable, and successful. Five Flavors of Dumb, by Antony John, has such character and is an excellent selection for high school reading list. Winner of the Schneider Family Award in 2011 for the teen category, it portrays life with disability both realistically and positively while avoiding stereotypes. For teachers who may not know where to readily find such novels, the American Library Association's list of Schneider Family Book Award winners is an invaluable resource. The award, endowed in 2003 by Katherine Schneider, gives three awards annually, one for younger children (ages 0-8), one for middle grades (ages 9-13), and one for teens (ages 14-18). Books selected can include both fiction and nonfiction. The award committee seeks books that realistically represent characters with disabilities and show them as active protagonists in the story. These criteria weed out characters who are exaggerated or stereotyped or whose only purpose is to represent the disability. In addition, the book must present accurate information about character's disability and the themes in the book must be age appropriate for the intended audience (ALA). The criteria for choosing the Schneider Family Award books use concepts appropriate for secondary students to consider issues of disability in texts. For instance, critiquing character's development can help students analyze if the character is seen as having personality traits and interests outside of his or her disability. This perspective allows students to question texts where character is seen as nothing more than product of the disability. It is important for teachers to incorporate these novels into curriculum and classroom libraries to ensure that students with disabilities have realistic, relatable characters to connect with and positive role models of people with disabilities leading full lives. Teaching novels featuring main characters with disabilities also normalizes this phenomenon so that it is no longer out of the ordinary or something to be ashamed of and hide (Dunn 17). In addition, incorporating these novels into reading lists provides students without disabilities opportunities to consider not just what it is like to have disability, but also how similar the characters' lives may be to their own.Disability studies, which is an interdisciplinary field that aims to redefine disability in terms of the social and environmental factors that create barriers for people to access resources and experiences, emphasizes critiquing the exclusionary practices that separate individuals as normal or abnormal (Reid and Valle). Disability studies emerged from reactions to omissions and distortions in the traditional curriculum's approach to studying disability (Linton 525). Because disability texts are missing from discussions of diversity and literary anthologies (Davis), incorporating literary works into the curriculum can be used to introduce disability perspective. Disability studies can be used in literature classrooms as a springboard for informed discussions of disability and ableism (Dunn 17).As framework for literary interpretation, disability studies critiques literary works for their treatment of disability as construct and for their treatment of characters with physical, mental, and emotional disabilities. Guiding questions can help secondary students in learning how to apply theories to interpret texts. Using questions adapted from the criteria for the Schneider Family Award and concepts from disability studies, teachers can introduce students to new definition of disability. Is Person with Disability Integral to the Story, not Merely Passive Bystander? To ensure that literature does not reinforce cultural stereotypes about people with disabilities being pitiable or passive, characters with disabilities should play an active role in determining their own fate. …" @default.
