- W2620687051 abstract "As of 2016, there are three areas of active landslides in the City of Colorado Springs that are causing significant structural distress to over 20 homes. The landslides became apparent after the historical rainfall in May of 2015, and are occurring along the base of Cheyenne Mountain. The 2015 landslides are the latest in a series of destructive landslides that have occurred in this part of Colorado Springs. Other destructive landslides occurred in 1995 and 1999. The landslides are caused by a combination of slope, weak soil and/or rock, and infiltration of water. Loading and/or grading for development also possibly contribute. Some of the landslides appear to be reactivated older landslides located within a large landslide complex. Others have activated in terrain where landslide deposits were not previously identified but where natural and ongoing weathering processes are likely to produce landslides. The shear surfaces of the slides are within the Pierre Shale, which weathers to claystone and clay, and also contains bentonite derived from volcanic ash. The depth and shape of the failure surfaces vary with location. This paper presents an historical overview of Colorado Springs landslides, with a focus on those that have become active since 2015. The geologic setting is described as is what is known or assumed about site specific conditions of the three landslide areas." @default.
