• W2620784023 abstract "The development objective of Increasing Resilience to Climate Change and Natural Hazards Project for Vanuatu is to pilot investments in priority villages in Vanuatu to increase the resilience to the impacts of natural hazards and climate variability and change, strengthen disaster risk management systems, and support recovery efforts post Tropical Cyclone Pam. Some of the negative impacts include: (i) consideration needs to be given to the types of root crop cultivars collected to ensure that the species chosen are not culturally insensitive to the communities; (ii) given that farming practices are largely the domain of males in the community, there is the potential for gender inequity in the absence of other activities aimed at female members of the community; (iii) consideration needs to given to the location of the plant distribution centres to ensure the maximum amount of farmers can have access to the climate-resistant crops; (iv)if rainwater tanks are not properly maintained there is the risk that the tanks will become a breeding area for mosquitoes; (v) stream diversions could dry up downstream water supplies for other communities reliant on the water source; (vi) impacts on community livelihood as a result of land use restrictions, this could include the creation of buffer zones or a change in land use from agriculture to aquaculture; (vii) disputes over access to land or access to resources; (viii) health risks from contact with contaminated water or soil; and (ix) gender inequity. Some of the mitigation measures include : (i) the root crop cultivars collected will be species already grown and viable in Vanuatu and will not be culturally insensitive to communities; (ii) the communities will participate in decision making around location of plots and crop types; (iii) the location of the plant distribution centres will include a consultation process with relevant stakeholders and prioritise locations that will not involve any building construction; (iv) the activities chosen will be inclusive of all social and gender groups within the community; (v) water supply standards and guidelines will require rainwater tanks will be fitted with first flush devices and roofs and gutters will be clean before the tank is connected; (vi) community consultation and assessment of social impacts is included in the development of the community-based adaptation plan, and that social impacts have been minimized; (vii) design to ensure all people can access facilities safely and securely; (viii) safe storage of hazardous materials; and (ix) provide suitable training to locals to do the work safely and provide all relevant safety equipment." @default.
