- W2621048551 abstract "Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is considered one of the most prevalent micronutrient deficiencies worldwide. Iron absorption is naturally restricted, and monotonous plant-based diets rich in iron absorption inhibitors, as consumed in unprivileged settings in the third world, are considered an important etiologic risk factor for IDA. In contrast, a number of small and nonrepresentative surveys in Western societies do not suggest an increased risk for IDA, but they do indicate plant-based diets increase the risk for low iron stores. It is generally assumed that a well-planned vegetarian diet rich in iron absorption enhancers can provide ample amounts of iron to match requirements even in vulnerable groups such as women of childbearing age, infants, and children, which have the highest requirements for iron. While dietary diversification should remain a long-term objective, iron fortification in the short term and biofortification in the medium term are considered viable and sustainable approaches to counteract the high worldwide prevalence of IDA." @default.
