Piezoelectric ultrasonic motors are a new type of actuator. They combine hightorque at low speed, simple mechanical design and good controllability. They provide high holding torque if no power is applied and compared to electromagnetic motors their torque per volume ratio can be higher by an order of magnitude. Recently various types of piezoelectric ultrasonic motors have found industrial application as cameralens drive or as actuator in the head restraint of automobile seats. One of the most important prerequisites for a broad industrial dissemination of piezoelectric ultrasonic motors is a further advance in the control of these drive systems. The present paper summarizes the state of the art in the control of piezoelectric ultrasonic motors and identifies directions for further research." @default.
