- W262328001 abstract "My comments here concern some of the problems of conducting research and are directed specifically to beginning researchers, graduate students and university professors recently out of graduate school. For the most part, the problems I discuss are not new ones. I doubt that I say much here that has not been said before. My attempt, however, is not to inform; it is to convince. As I recall it, while I was a graduate student, less than five years ago, I was aware of many of the problems that I discuss here, but I had no real belief that they would affect me. Certainly, they were problems, but they were other people's problems. What I want to argue here is that they are not just other people's problems; they are problems likely to be encountered by the vast majority of would-be researchers in our field. And those who do not solve them are unlikely to do any significant amount of research. Those who do significant amounts of research in our field are certainly in the minority. For one overwhelming fact about research in English education and reading is that most people in the field do not do any. As Dwight Burton remarked at a conference similar to this one held two years ago, the majority of research in English education is done as dissertations by people who then go out and never do so much as another single piece of research. A simple count of the sources of research listed in the annual review of research appearing in Research in the Teaching of English confirms this statement. Of the 144 studies cited in RTE last year, 75 of them or 52 percent of the total listed were doctoral dissertations. If, of course, each of the Ph.D.'s who graduated in the ten years previous to the one in which this review of research appeared had published at least one study during that year, the percentage of studies that were not dissertations cited would have been several times greater than that of the dissertations cited. Although I have no comparable figures for research in reading, I believe that the productivity of the majority of Ph.D.'s in reading is only somewhat greater than that of those in English education. I will turn now to consideration of several problems that I believe have led to this situation." @default.
