- W2624039258 abstract "I lived in the New York City area from 1993 to 1995, dividing my time between three communities: Parkside, a wealthy, mainly white, upper east side neighborhood in Manhattan; Kelley, a white working-class community in Queens; and Queenston, a mixed, somewhat lower-working-class community also in Queens. All of these names are pseudonyms. When I started my field work, I expected I might find a decrease in individualistic tendencies around child rearing among the lower-working class. Instead, I simply found a different kind of individualism, which leads me to address the issue of the two kinds of individualism I found in my research. I feel strongly that these kinds of individualism be thought of more as tendencies, leanings, or, as Bourdieu might say, “trajectories” rather than homogenous categories or monolithic stereotypes that every parent fulfills. For the most part, I lean toward psychologized individualism, but this in no way prevents me from practicing other kinds of individualism as well. I like to think of these kinds of individualism as akin to the way recent psychological anthropologists have had to rethink the labels individualistic/collectivistic, or egocentric/sociocentric. No one American woman is completely individualistic, just as no one Japanese woman is completely sociocentric. Both elements are contained in every individual, and yet we often find groups and individuals from particular cultures and classes with leanings toward one kind more than the other." @default.
