- W262448415 abstract "This chapter reviews the kinetics of imbibition in order to understand the parameters controlling water uptake rates and how these are related to the success of subsequent germination. Water uptake during seed germination is generally classified into three phases: rapid hydration, a lag period, and another phase of rapid hydration marked by radical emergence. Imbibition is identified with the first stage of water uptake, and is regarded as a physical process: the consequence of matric forces of the seed and the water availability. Rates of imbibition can be manipulated by altering the moisture gradient between the imbibing medium and the seed. Because imbibition rates cannot be manipulated predictably by changes in the moisture gradient, it is suggested that, even though the moisture gradient is the driving force for imbibition, the components of the diffusivity coefficient may be more important in determining the rate at which imbibition occurs." @default.
