- W2625837821 abstract "Assignment of Fordilla troyensis to the molluscan class Bivalvia (=Pelecypoda) is based on interpretation of various elevations on steinkerns as impressions of muscles and of a pallial line. New information on shell-interior structures does not support this interpretation. Fordilla is reconstructed as a deposit-feeding bivalved mollusk that crept along the surface. Presumably, members of the Bivalvia originally required a ligament and powerful muscles to burrow into the substrate. Teeth and sockets are equally important in aligning valves during burrowing, though stocks of more advanced pelecypods lack them. Fordilla lacks an obvious hinge line and prominent teeth and sockets. Conventional phylogenies have suggested that nuculoid pelecypods, which first appeared in the late Early Ordovician, constitute the stem form of the class, and gave rise to other groups. Following convention, the Bivalvia are here judged to originate and radiate from mollusks with two valves that show these additional morphologic features necessary for burrowing. Fordilla may be too different to be a member of the class." @default.
