- W2626195280 abstract "The ability of numerical coastal process models to describe the evolution of coastal features over timescales significantly greater than the incident hydrodynamic forcing remains fundamentally limited by computational power. This limitation is commonly addressed by applying a 'scale factor' to the model such that the simulated morphodynamic evolution becomes some multiple of the prototype timescale the simulation encompasses. Such techniques require simplification of the boundary conditions to just a few representative forcing conditions. In this paper we describe an acceleration technique that uses a genetic algorithm (GA) to simplify an incident wave climate to just a few representative conditions, based on the ability of the reduced wave climate to reproduce a target sediment transport pattern. The ability of the accelerated to reproduce the seasonal (order of months) evolution of the sand shoals and channel of a tidal inlet ebb delta is assessed against a 'brute force' simulation containing the full environmental forcing, and found to be highly dependent upon the number and variety of wave classes captured in the GA optimisation routine. Further research is on-going to assess the sensitivity and robustness of the GA optimisation process." @default.
