- W26368324 abstract "nnn This thesis analyses the constructions and experiences of women who belonged to what were once referred to as the lcriminal classesr. These womenrs ongoing involvement with crime and other criminally-involved individuals marked them out as participants of deviant subcultures in Brisbane and Melbourne between 1860 and 1920. This study foregrounds these womenrs relationships with each other, showing that it was such relationships that largely shaped and defined their lives. Paying close attention to such womenrs connections to each other helps elucidate the workings of their criminal subcultures and provides insights into how they were able to exert agency within the various realms in which they moved. Yet while connections between these women played a central role in their negotiations of everyday life, they have been given little explicit attention by historians.nnn In addressing this lacuna in existing scholarship, I adopt a spatial focus, examining relationships between criminal or underclass women within the realm of the public imagination, economic arenas, domestic contexts, places of amusements, courtrooms, and disciplinary institutions. I show that while men also participated in criminal subcultures, they were often transient figures in the lives of female participants n and that as a result, womenrs strongest ties were often with each other. Criminal womenrs relationships with each other were key to their illicit economic strategies. They also provided them with their chief familial support and enabled them to enjoy a shared recreational culture. Furthermore, participation in criminal subcultures alongside other women produced alternative codes of behaviour that influenced their encounters with the judiciary, and provided them with a sense of belonging that encouraged them to resist reformatory efforts. While social commentators of the day presented relationships between criminal women as corruptive and malevolent, this thesis thus shows that strong, female-centred subcultures offered criminal women their most significant support structures." @default.
