- W2639063 abstract "Anatomical, electrophysiological, and more recently, functional imaging studies have been shown that the processing of somatosensory information involves a number of structures in the brain. The idea of seperated ascending pathways which convey the information that inevitably produces tactile or pain perception is obsolete. Perhaps the simplest reason lies in the fact that the brain has many ways and strategies for modifying the incoming information it receives, and sensation is not merely a facsimile in consciousness of every stimulus to the central nervous system (CNS). This article considers some aspects of the functional architecture of somatosensory networks, with special emphasis on the interactions between bottom-up and top-down mechanisms that contribute to the discrimination of innocuous and noxious information." @default.
