- W264067579 abstract "Charles H. Thompson not only founded the Journal of Negro Education but served as its Editor-in-Chief for the first 31 years of its existence. Founders are those rare individuals endowed with that special insight which enables them not only to perceive major human needs but to create answers to those needs-in other words, to conceptualize things as they ought to be and find the ways and means to translate their conceptions into reality. In 1931, there was no periodical that dealt systematically or comprehensively with the enormous problems that characterized the education of Blacks in the United States. Moreover, the white educational journals only very occasionally carried articles or studies concerned with the education of Blacks. There was, therefore, an urgent and critical need for a journal that would identify and define the problems, that would analyze them, propose solutions and serve as a vehicle for sharing information and research on a national basis. Charles H. Thompson saw all of this with 20/20 vision. Thus, the Journal of Negro Education was born. Not all founders are able to bring their creations to full fruition. Thompson was. He brought excellent training to the task, having earned the Ph.D. degree in education from the University of Chicago in 1925-the first Black in the United States to be awarded this degree in that field. But he also brought more than excellent academic training. He brought a penetrating mind and great editorial talent. Under his editorship, there was no major problem affecting the education of Blacks in America that the Journal did not address, and usually by the individuals best prepared, at the time, to address them; its coverage of the literature in black higher education was almost encyclopedic; its identification and analysis of trends in the field had no peer; its special features such as Martin D. Jenkins's black college enrollment reports and Ellis O. Knox's monitoring of the Negro as a subject of doctoral research for the period covered, are the only aggregated sources for such information available; its contributing and advisory staff reads like a who's in black education. But the Journal was not limited to Blacks; its articles were contributed by just about everybody who was anybody in black educationsome 1200 during the period of Dr. Thompson's editorship. Its excellent editing made it a joy to read; its yearbook issues were definitive treatments of the subjects selected. Important features of the Journal during Thompson's editorship were his own editorial comments. …" @default.
