However, since the current lane departure prevention systems are based on lane marker detection by a camera, the systems cannot be operated in urban area which has complex environment. The objective of this study is to develop lane departure prevention system which can detect road boundary in urban environment by using LIDAR. The proposed system detects the curbs on both sides of the road path. As the first step of the study, this paper shows that it is feasible to detect road boundaries by using LIDAR and the lane departure risk can be quantitatively evaluated by using the index, Time-to-Lane-Crossing." @default.
