- W264301315 abstract "Vita brevis est, ars longa. Seneca, De Brevitatae Vitae, 1, 1 IN JUNE, 1977, I AND MY FRIEND Matthias Kern, noted composer, church musician, and organist from Hannover, were on tour throughout West Germany, performing concerts of sacred music for voice and organ in various venues in cities large and small. Thanks to arrangements made by a mutual acquaintance, Hungarian organist Istvan Ella, we also had a concert in Budapest. Our experiences in the communist East Zone constitute a story in itself, but are not pertinent to this tale. Following our performance, on the return cab ride to the train station, our garrulous driver, upon learning we were musicians, waxed philosophic in his fractured German, assuring us westerners that it was certainly not the man in the street who housed enmity and who supported hot or cold warfare, but rather institutions and governments. During the discussion, he had stopped to pick up another fare, a Russian soldier who subsequently appeared to comprehend nothing of the continuing conversation. When he departed the cab, the Russian, ostensibly my mortal enemy, turned to me, smiled, and said, Good bye, American Tourister!-a friendly reference to the brand name he apparently had spotted on the briefcase I was toting. That the indomitable human spirit is able to soar above geographic boundaries, politics, and personal tragedies is borne out by myriad anecdotes such as this. Further, art often is the vehicle by which the spirit transcends adverse circumstances. (It is not the individual who makes war; it is not the institution that creates art.) More specifically still, vocal music often provides the medium in which art elevates the human spirit. I remember, for example, a very moving performance of Brahms's Ein deutsches Requiem, led by Leonard Bernstein, in the immediate wake of John F. Kennedy's assassination on November 22, 1963. In last issue's Guest Editorial, Karl Paulnack recounted the role of music in the aftermath of 9/11. I have read much concerning Jews incarcerated in Nazi death camps, who, facing incomprehensible misery and hardship, organized concerts and even composed music. And, as indicated in my last Editor's Commentary, my mind continues to be haunted by the elevating role of song in the tragic life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. While still a free man, but only days before his arrest and imprisonment, Bonhoeffer organized and participated in a family presentation of the cantata Praise to the Lord, presumably Bach's BWV 137, Lobe den Herren, der machtigen Konig der Ehren, for his father's seventy-fifth birthday, March 31, 1943. …" @default.
