- W2643061 abstract "Publisher Summary The use of animals for scientific and medical inquiry for the purpose of advancing basic knowledge and understanding and alleviating disease and suffering of humans and animals is a relatively modern development. When animals are used in research, the humans who use them have a moral obligation to provide humane care and use in the laboratory setting. This obligation encompasses the application of the principles of reduction, refinement, and replacement in experimental design and conduct, not only for ethical and humane reasons, but for scientific integrity as well. To assure animals are used ethically and humanely in quality scientific inquiry, society has deemed it necessary to oversee the conduct of experiments through government agencies and accrediting organizations that provide structure to animal care and use programs, critical oversight, and regulatory enforcement. Ethical considerations, regulatory requirements, and scientific findings support the need to investigate what constitutes a beneficial environmental enrichment for laboratory rats, and how that enrichment can be effectively implemented to support and improve animal welfare and research results." @default.
